It’s that magical time of the year when we celebrate Arnold Drake’s, Bruno Premiani’s (and Bob Haney’s, more or less) Doom Patrol, one of the most entertaining and complex cast of characters of the Silver Age and beyond. Above is Cliff Steele, a.k.a. Robotman, a former race car driver whose brain is salvaged from the burning wreckage of an otherwise-fatal accident and inserted into the powerful body of a golden automaton! He goes nuts for a bit, briefly becoming a menace to all mankind (all of which might have been inspired by a pair of old Otto Binder stories in Strange Adventures, featuring another golden robot named Tim Steele, and which I’ll write about on Gone&Forgotten in the new year). I think he’s the only member who’s been in every incarnation of the Doom Patrol, effectively being the heart-and-soul of the team!
